this module works well for me, just as described.
We probably have the wrong blocks on our pages, but the menu links are still hidden on a 404-page, despite having a theme which is developed by the same developer as this module. So for us the module doesn't work and there is no documentation to fix it. The issue this module is trying to solve is fixed in D7.
