The classified Ads module which allows users to set Ads and allows expiration data for ads, is really effective and useful for running commercial sites. Also there is a list of related modules which allows adding much more features to it.
I installed the 6.x version, and it's working fine so far. Relies on taxonomies, so it's straightforward to add your categories for ads. It's very similar to books, but has expiration dates for ads as well as automatic reminder emails to the authors.
