Good module with a few gotchas

This module is very good for what it does- smtp auth support for standard text emails. The other reviewer here mentioned a 'white screen of death' or WSOD which is common when something is very messed up, but there's a drupal org page on steps to take to fix it, starting with giving drupal more memory.

At any rate, the gotchas with this module is unforeseen interactions with the mime module and drupal 6x. The community has addressed this problem with messaging api, a means to integrate smtp mail with mime as well as with user-user onsite messaging and sms, etc. So like Rules is to actions/triggers, the hope is to subsume this problem with a standardized means of messaging so do some research on that. Sorry to make this review more of a review of other modules, but I suppose I was trying to help guide any readers here with problems I ran into. hope this helps!

White Page

The installation and configuration is easy enough, however, when you send a test mail or use any feature that sends a mail you get a white page for the response, and the mail is not sent.

Saved my life

This module is unbelievably useful. After stressing for days about the fact that a lot of email from our drupal powered site isn't reaching users because of hotmails useless spam filter. After several SPF configurations and even an email to Hotmails senderid people I came upon this module. Now all of my sites email gets sent via google apps for domains. A lovely side effect of this is that any mail sent from the site ends up in my info@ sent items folder. This means I can keep track of everything sent from within google apps.

My only complaint is that setup took 5 minutes longer than it should have. I got an error message after the install and had to look in smtp.module to discover that phpmailer needs to be installed in a folder called phpmailer in the root directory of the module. No biggy and I might contribute a patch to the install instructions tonight to make it easier for drupal noobs.
